Klingon Alphabet

There is no known Klingon alphabet, but there is a way to write Klingon, first used in The Klingon Dictionary.

Alphabetical order

When listing Klingon words using our romanized transcription system, use the following alphabetical order(1):

a b ch D e gh H I j l m n ng o p q Q r S t tlh u v w y '

This order is purely a convenience to Terrans for sorting Klingon words using their transcription system for Klingon. It has no relation to any Klingon word, letter, or symbol order.

It's a matter of some debate whether or not "native" Klingon is written with an alphabet at all. Marc Okrand once said he believes it isn't, but he recently seemed to accept the pIqaD used in several canon sources.

Note that it's basically English letter-order, with ' at the end, and ng following n and tlh following t and Q following q. Remember that letter combinations representing one sound (ch, gh, ng, tlh) are treated as a single letter for sorting purposes.

Letter "names"

The letters do not have any names, but there is a possibility to "pronounce" single letters (instead of saying for instance "capital cue" or "tee-ell-eightsh")(2). To form such sound words, there are three rules:
  • Consonants are followed by -ay, e.g. bay, chay, Day, tlhay ...
  • Vowels are preceded by an apostrophe and followed by a t, e.g. 'at, 'et, 'It, 'ot, 'ut
  • The apostrophe is called qaghwI', lit. one who interrupts
