De Klingon Hamletmachine

De Klingon Hamletmachine is the title of a play scheduled for March 2020, by the Dutch theatre group "Urland", in cooperation with Theater Rotterdam. It is based on the Hamletmachine (orig. "Die Hamletmaschine"), a play written in 1977 by German playwright and theatre director Heinrich Müller. The play will be presented in Klingon and Dutch, with English surtitles.(1)

Production process

The idea was born when the group found out about the Klingon Hamlet. They then visited the 25th qep'a' in 2018 and talked to Klingon creator Marc Okrand and many other enthousiastic Klingonists to find a better understanding of the language. According to their website, the group "spontaneously became lovingly extremist and now makes a visual performance about language. URLAND wants to make language tangible: the confusion, the (de-)construction, the beauty and the ugliness."

The premiere is scheduled for March 4, 2020, 8:30 p.m. in Theater Rotterdam.

The group

The theatre group URLAND was founded in 2010 and consists of four young people: Ludwig Bindervoet, Thomas Dudkiewicz, Marijn Alexander de Jong, Jimi Zoet. They are inspired by techno en deathmetal, introducing lasers, and foam machines.
