Star Trek: How to Speak Klingon: Essential Phrases for the Intergalactic Traveler is a book containing 24 pages, which was published by Chronicle Books on 1st May 2013.


The book contains an introduction of the Klingon pronunciation, followed by ten scenes with each presenting three Klingon phrases, including a translation and a reference to the Klingon culture:

  1. At a restaurant
  2. At the movies
  3. At a sporting event
  4. At a birthday party
  5. In the office
  6. At karaoke night
  7. On public transportation
  8. At a wedding
  9. On the golf course
  10. In a space station

Unknown words

Marc Okrand was not involved in the creation of this book. There are few non-canon words in the book, their source is not clear.
  • In the 2nd chapter, tickets are ordered for romuluSngan julyetlh je, "Romulan and Juliet".
  • A the birthday party section, a word for glommer appeared, spelled as ghIlo'meH.
  • In Chapter 7, an advertising sign uses the word gho'rIch, a non-canon spelling for the term "gorch", a Klingon pimple first mention in Star Trek: Insurrection.
  • The backcover uses the term yIghoSDo' meaning "Good luck".


The illustrations are made by Alex Fine, text is done by Ben Grossblatt. The phrases from this book were translated to Klingon with the help of the KLI.

Sound module

The book also contains a sound module, were you can push one of ten buttons to listen to the first Klingon phrase of each chapter. The phrases were spoken by Lawrence M. Schoen.
