Type 1 verb suffixes

Type 1 verb suffixes are referring to oneself or one another. They show that the subject of the phrase does something to itself or that at least two people do something to each other. (1)

Suffix meaning linguistic term
-'egh oneself reflexive suffix
-chuq one another, each other reciprocal suffix

These suffixes are always used with a "no object" prefix. In addition, the suffix -chuq can only be used with a plural prefix (ma-, Su-, pe- and the zero-prefix). The suffix -'egh does not require a plural subject. Don't confuse it with -chuq, which does.

yIqIp'egh Hit yourself!
jIlegh'egh I see myself
bIQoy'egh'a'? Do you hear yourself?
vuv'egh tlhIngan A Klingon respects himself
Sulegh'egh'a'? Do you see yourselves?
Sulegh'chuq'a'? Do you see each other?

-chuq combined with -moH

When -chuq is combined with type 4 verb suffix -moH, the "doer" of the action is not the subject; The suffix -moH says that the subject is causing the doers to do the action to each other. The doers, not the causer, act upon each other.

Compare these:

HIvchuq verengan Duj.
= "The Ferengi ships attack each other." They are both subject and doer.

HIvchuqmoH verengan Duj.
Means that the Ferengi ships are causing something to happen: Either they are causing each other to attack (there's no implication that they're attacking each other, just that they're attacking someone), or they're causing someone unspecified or general (there's no implication that it's the Ferengi ships) to attack each other.

Canon examples of -chuqmoH

they weaken each other (st.k 11/1997)

Qo'noS tuqmey muvchuqmoH qeylIS.
Kahless united the tribes of Kronos (paq'batlh)

-'egh combined with -moH

It is not possible to state a command using an adjective, like "be cool". In this case, the command is spoken in a way like "cause yourself to be ...". This is done using the suffix -'egh plus -moH.

Canon examples of -'eghmoH

he/she honors him/herself (st.k 11/1997)

Heat yourself! ("Cause yourself to be hot!") KGT

Freeze yourself! ("Cause yourself to be frozen!") KGT

muptaHvIS tay''eghmoH QeHDaj Hoch.
All his rage focused in one blow (paq'batlh)

Special Usage

When combined with the verb lIn share (with someone), the idiomatic expression lInchuq means that subjects have some kind of physical relationship of some sort.(2)
