Wedding Ceremony

This is the Klingon translation of the wedding ceremony as seen in the DSN episode "You Are Cordially Invited...". The cermony has been translated by Terrence Donnelly. This translation has been copied from his homepage into this wiki for archiving and future reference, because the original page is no longer available (1). It still remains coypright of Terrence Donnelly, © 1998.

Notes

  • In the text, "p. v. puqloD/puqbe'" stands for pong, vav puqloD/puqbe' (name, son/daughter of father) and refers to places where the name of the person being spoken to should be inserted.
  • In this text, the original word qa' nuvpu' for "gods" has been replaced by Qunpu', because the word Qun had not been known at the time of the original translation. The translator would have used that word if it had existed.
  • In Terrence' original translation, he is using a transliteration for the words Tawi'Yan ("sword-bearer"), Kal'Hyah ("klingon bachelor party"), and Ma'Staka ("pugil sticks"), but there is no known canon spelling for these words.

(Drums are heard. The Lady of the House enters.)
Lady: tlhIngan tIq luchenmoHtaHvIS, qul lulo' Qunpu' 'ej baS lulo'. With fire and steel did the gods forge the Klingon heart.
qu'mo' QaptaHbogh tIq 'ej chuSmo', jach Qunpu'. So fiercely did it beat, so loud was the sound, that the gods cried out
"DaHjaj tIq wIchenmoHbogh HoS law', "On this day we have brought forth the strongest heart
ngeHbejDaq Hoch HoS puS. in all the heavens.
tIqvam qaDlu'chugh vaj HoSDaj Hajlu'bej." None can stand before it without trembling at its strength.
'ach pujchoH tlhIngan tIq 'ej QapHa'. But then the Klingon heart weakened, its steady rhythm faltered
ghel Qunpu' "qatlh bIpujchoH? and the gods said, "Why do you weaken so?
ngeHbejDaq tIq nIvqu' pIchenmoHta'." We have made you the strongest in all of creation."
vaj jang tlhIngan tIq. And the heart said...
(Enter the groom)
Groom: jImob. I... am alone.
Lady: Qagh 'e' lutlhoj Qunpu'. And the gods knew that they had erred.
qul baS je Suqqa' 'ej latlh tIq luchenmoH. So they went back to their forge and brought forth another heart...

'ach QaptaHvIS tIq cha'DIch HoS jen, But the second heart beat stronger
tIq wa'DIch HoS 'eS, vaj QeHchoH tIq wa'DIch. than the first, and the first was jealous of its power.
(The Tawi'Yan hands a betleH to the bride and groom. They engage in a mock battle. The bride conquers the groom, but does not administer the killing blow.)
Lady: Do' Sov nIv ghaj tIq cha'DIch. Fortunately, the second heart was tempered by wisdom.
Bride: mamuvchuqchugh, vaj nucharghlaH pagh. If we join together, no force can stop us.
(They give the betleHmey back to the Tawi'Yan.)
Lady: SIbI' QapchuqDI' tIqDu', QI'tu'Daq ghIjbogh ghum Qoylu'. And when the two hearts began to beat together, they filled the heavens with a terrible sound.
poH wa'DIch Hajbej Qunpu'. For the first time, the gods knew fear.
Haw' 'e' lunID 'ach ngabchu'pu' 'eb. They tried to flee, but it was too late.
Qun Qaw'chu' tlhIngan tIqDu' 'ej QI'tu' lumeQchu'. The Klingon hearts destroyed the gods who created them and turned the heavens to ashes.
qaSpu'DI' wanI'vam, QapchuqDI' cha' tlhIngan tIqDu', not qaDlaH vay'. To this very day, no one can oppose the beating of two Klingon hearts...
(The Lady addresses the groom.)

Groom: vIlay'bej. I swear.
(She addresses the bride)
Lady: p, v. puqbe', yIjang. loDvamvaD Qapbej'a' tIqlIj? Jadzia, daughter of Kela, does your heart beat only for this man?
Bride: HIja'. Yes.
Lady: loD retlhDaq bIQam 'ej Hoch qaDwI'pu' DaSuv 'e' Dalay''a'? And do you swear to join with him and stand with him against all who would oppose you?
Bride: vIlay'bej. I swear.

(The participants at the kal'Hyah attack the bride and groom, using Ma'Staka clubs.)
(The ceremony is over.)
