More Information

The English verb "know" can have different meanings, which other languages express using different words: The first is "having knowledge of" (German wissen or French savoir) e.g. "I know that birds fly". The other is "be familiar with" (German kennen or French connaître) e.g. "I know your father".

Canon examples prove that in Klingon, the verb Sov can be used for both definitions. In addition, "to have knowledge of, or be familiar with" was a definition supplied on startrek.com's "Star Trek: Continuum Klingon Compendium ("Klingon Linguistic Studies"), but it is unlikely that Marc Okrand has provided that information, so this source should not be seen as canon.

The slang word, a verb, is used in such constructions as jIna' [...]. These kinds of meanings may be expressed without using slang by employing such verbs as Honbe' ("not doubt") or Sovbej ("know for certain"). (KGT p. 156)
